church
The Adorno family built the Jerusalem church, also called the Church
of the
Holy Sepulchre in the 15th century. The first Adorno, Oppicino, whose
family
originated in Genoa, was friends with the Count of Flanders, Gewijde
van
Dampierre. He settled down in our region and died here in 1307. The
Adornos
were prominent figures in the medieval Bruges. At the beginning of
the 15th
century, they decided to build, next to their manor house (still existing
at that date), a small stone chapel in order to replace a crumbling
wooden
chapel. A Papal Bull of Martinus V (May 12, 1427) gave him them permission.
Tradition says that Jacob Adorno (+1465) and his brother Pieter (+
1464)
made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and were inspired by the building plan
of the
Church of the Holy Sepulchre built there.
